Lifelong Learning For Designers: Learning to Learn

I’m a lifelong learning advocate.

No matter what you do for a living or what you aspire to, lifelong learning is an important part of a successful and thriving career (and life)!

For designers, lifelong learning and “learning to learn” are critical skills to get ahead (and stay ahead!) in the field.

Be(come) a Self-Learner

Learning to learn.

One of the greatest things about being a designer is being involved in a very exciting and dynamic field.

What you learn today as a designer will evolve into something new. Nothing stays the same. So designers must embrace learning, because you’ll learn something new everyday.

For design students, here’s the “pearl of wisdom” —

Be a self-learner and learn to find answers on your own.

If you have a question, you can bet that someone has posted the answer online. Yes, learn how to search Google for answers. 🙂 (I know this sounds so obvious, but …)

Often students are surprised that design professionals don’t have all the answers. Even we need to figure out things for ourselves on a daily basis. Learning to think on your feet and to creatively problem-solve is key. This will make you a very valuable designer, technologist, and entrepreneur!

Learning Resources

Becoming a great designer.

Keeping up-to-date on what you need to know and actively pursuing the necessary knowledge and skill sets is part of the job description for a designer.

Important things to consider:

  • Stay up-to-date
  • Know your tools and skill sets
  • Collaborate. (Design is a team sport>)

Okay, that’s it — short and sweet.
